- Those wondering whether they are eligible for a surgical procedure such as this would need to consider their height relevant to their weight.
- Medically, a Body Mass Index (BMI) is used which is the weight over the height squared. If the BMI is greater than 30, this surgical procedure is offered for consideration. Other factors taken into account are whether the patient has medical conditions, such as hypertension, diabetes, arthritis or sleep apnoea which may benefit from long-term sustainable weight reduction.
- A less accurate indication is taking your height in centimetres, subtracting 100 to get an ideal weight, eg 196 - 100 = 96kg. Then add half of that total, eg 96 + 48 = 144kg. If your weight is greater than your calculation you may qualify.
- Your BMI is simply your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared. For example, if you are 120 kilograms and 1.75 metres tall your calculation would be 120 divided by 1.75 x 1.75 (3.0625 metres squared). This would give you a BMI of 39.
The BMI is determined with the formula body weight divided by height to square. To make it easy for visitor of your homepage to calculate the Body Mass Index (BMI), use the Free BMI Widget by BMI-Club . Additional information: BMI Calculator.

You could be considered for surgery if your BMI is above 30, however while a BMI of 30 is recognised as being obese by the World Health Organisation the risk factors are not skewed as positively (operation Vs potential gain) as they would be if the BMI was above 35. Therefore to have the Lap Band at a BMI of 30 would require the presence of other factors such as premature joint disease/lower back problems/hypertension/diabetes et cetera.
It is not only the presence of excess fat that has the potential to cause medical problems such as early heart attack, hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidaemias, but also where it is found or its distribution. That is abdominal or visceral fat. Abdominal fat carries an increased risk over fat distribution for example in the buttocks or thighs. A ready reference for abdominal fat and increased risk is waist measurement. A waist measurement of 100cm or greater in men or 95cm in women indicates an increased risk from the medical problems listed above, not to mention the risk that is accepted from weight in general arthritis/low back problems/joint disorders/depression/self esteem.
